Benzoin tree (Styrax benzoin) producing benzoin resin, Sumatra. White drops of liquid styrax flow from incisions in the trunk and thicken on contact with air. This balm is rich in benzoic acid. Styrax Balm" or "Benzoin" has antiseptic, healing and expectorant properties. It is used in perfumery especially as a fixative, its smell brings a sweet, slightly vanilla and balsamic note. It is also used in the manufacture of "Papier d'Armenie".
