Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the ultrastructure of a region of cell cytoplasm with a concentration of stacks of Golgi membranes surrounded by rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER). The functional coupling between rER and Golgi is evident by membranous vesicles budding from the rER that will join with the Golgi for further metabolic processing. Hundreds of vesicles are associated with the Golgi stacks. This signifies the dynamics of Golgi membranes in the production of vesicles destined for export, or internalised by cell endocytosis for recycling or directed into the lysosomal system as noted by scattered lysosomes showing increased density.
