Foraminifera (plural for foraminifer) are single-celled organisms (protists) with a calcareous shell, that may have one or several chambers. They live in abundance in marine environments, mostly bottom dwelling (benthonic) with relatively few species floating (planktonic). These species are from Holocene deposits and are no larger than 1 mm, which is near their minimum size.
