The Mosque-Cathedral of Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain, is a truly fascinating building with an eventful history. Originally a Visigoth Catholic Church, it was divided into Muslim and Christian halves when Muslims conquered Spain in 711, but shortly afterwards was completely converted into a mosque. The fascinating repeating Hypostyle columns and arches that characterise the building are shown here. Following the medieval Reconquista by the Christians, it was converted back into a Catholic Cathedral, with a magnificent renaissance nave planted incongruously in the centre of the mosque.
