Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952), British physiologist. Sherrington was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the nervous system. Sherrington's main work was on reflex motor nerve action in vertebrates. A whole range of neurological terms were coined by him, including synapse, motor unit, neuron pool and others. His book 'The Integrative Action of the Nervous System' (1906) is a landmark in modern physiology. He was elected Fellow (1893) and President (1920-1925) of the Royal Society, and made Knight Grand Cross (GBE) in 1922. He was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1924.
