Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), American activist and educator. Bethune is best known for founding black colleges and was an advisor to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was a campaigner for civil rights. Bethune served as the director of the National Youth Administration's (NYA) Office of Negro Affairs c. 1936-1943. Photographed in 1949.
