Naevus of Ota in a 49 year old Hispanic female. This hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanocytes (melanin producing cells) in the dermal layer. Around fifty per cent of cases are present at birth, the rest appearing during puberty or adulthood. Women are more commonly affected than men. When the eye is affected there may be an increased risk of developing glaucoma.
