Colesevelam hydrochloride tablet (labelled C625). This drug, sold under the brand name Welchol or Cholestagel, is an adjunct to diet and exercise to reduce elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in adults with primary hyperlipidaemia. It is a bile acid sequestrant drug. It is often prescribed as a monotherapy to patients with high cholesterol where statins are not a suitable medication, however it may be used in conjunction with statins for other patients. Most common side-effects include bloating and constipation, which can lead to low patient compliance. However, this means it may also be used to treat the symptoms of patients suffering with bile acid diarrhoea.
