These silica particles on a glass surface are formed by burning a solution in a flame, much like soot is formed on a candle. They aggregate above the flame at nano- and microscale structures. The particles are then functionalized with a fluorine-containing compound. Due to the roughness and the chemical properties of the surface, both water and oils roll off. Foam bubbles that come into contact with the silica nanostructure burst immediately. Magnification: x150 when printed at 15 centimetres wide.
