Polarized light micrograph of azidothymidine (AZT) drug crystals, also known as zidovudine (ZDV) and sold under the brand name Retrovir. It is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. It is widely used in combination with other drugs (combination therapy).
