Golgi membranes, transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Ultrastructure of a cluster of Golgi membrane stacks. The Golgi is associated with rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER) from which vesicles containing newly-assembled polypeptides shuttle to the Golgi for further processing. Vesicles emerging from the Golgi may be destined for cell export or lysosome production. Conversely, vesicles derived from the lysosomal digestive systems may recycle back to the Golgi and thereafter show retrograde transport to the rough ER. The Golgi is thus a central sorting station in the cell. Magnification: x13,000 when width printed at 10cm.
