Microglia, a type of nervous system cell previously suspected of causing retinal damage, has been shown to be beneficial in slowing the progression of prion disease in the brain, and now in the retina. In this image, microglial cells (green) engulf and remove prion-damaged photoreceptors (red), which appears to slow retinal degeneration.
