Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran (1845-1922), French physician who discovered the parasites which cause malaria. Laveran was a military surgeon who served in Algeria during 1878-1883. In 1880 he discovered that malaria victims had pigmented bodies in their blood. He concluded that these parasites caused malaria. Laveran named the parasite Oscillaria malariae, but Plasmodium was eventually adopted instead. He also researched leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. Laveran was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and used the prize money to found a laboratory of tropical medicine at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France.
