This is a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) with a bandaged ear.It is generally believed he cut off his own ear in December 1888, as a means of self mutilation, after a quarrel with his friend the artist Paul Gauguin. Gauguin shared the Yellow House in Arles with Van Gogh for a short period before Gauguin left. Van Gogh struggled with serious mental health issues all of his life. Many of Van Gogh's self-portraits can be considered as a barometer of his anxious moods. His doctor diagnosed ???cute mania with generalized delirium??and ???ental epilepsy??Many experts have suggested that the artist lived with bipolar disorder. Others consider that he suffered from Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
