One of the famous Sunflower series of oil paintings by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), painted in August 1888, With these paintings he was experimenting with harmonies based on one or two colours, principally yellow, but with a blue-green background. In the summer of 1888, he embarked on a large number of paintings of sunflowers (Helianthus anuus) to decorate his studio and house in preparation for the arrival of his friend and mentor the artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) with whom van Gogh had a unique connection.
