Marseilles, France - 20 June 2013; no people in view. Vivid emerald Mediterranean waters grace the old Fort Saint-Jean area of Marseilles, France. This area is characterised by strong architectural contrasts; here we see the ultra modern MuCem Museum (Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean) on the right, connected by elevated walkway to Fort Saint Jean on the left. An original Knight Hospitaller complex here, built for the Crusades, was replaced after their forced expulsion under Louis XIV's orders from 1668 to 1671 . The risibly phallic tower in shot is also part of this later defensive emplacement.
