Marseilles, France - 20 June 2013; no people in view. The Old Fort Saint-Jean area of Marseilles, France is characterised by strong architectural contrasts; here we see the ultra modern MuCEM Museum (Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean), connected by elevated walkway to the historic Fort Saint Jean on the left. MuCEM is a national museum inaugurated in June 2013 as part of Marseille-Provence 2013, a year when Marseille was designated as the European Capital of Culture. Here we see its striking metallic facade facing the Harbour. Built of stone, water and wind, MuChem was designed by the the architects Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta. Editor Note - shot from public area facing the harbour, across the bay.
