Italy; Apulia; city of Conversano: monumental entrance of Monastero di San Benedetto (Saint Benedict Monastery): According to legends; the monastery dates back to 6th century AD. First official mentioning was in 10th century and in 1098; when the first duke of Conversano; Goffredo; gave fiscal rights to the monastery. In 1110; Pope Paschalis I put the monastery under direct rule of the Holy Seat. In 1256; Pope Alexander IV gave eben juristic rights to the monastery. In 1266; Pope Clemens IV gave the monastery to nuns of the Cistercian order; coming from Greece and guided by Dameta Paleologa. In 1658; the monumental entrance was built. Parts of the monastery conserve the ancient city walls of 9th century. The campanile is higher than the bell tower of the cathedral; due to the will of the nuns of the monastery.
