NETSUKE: SARUMAWASHI WITH BAMBOO STICK; PEACH AND MONKEY.
Japan. Edo Period. 18th century.

Ivory; finely carved; engraved and darkly stained; on the back beautiful; partly gold-yellow to cinnamon-colored patina. The monkey juggler is standing in plaid; belted garment; with a sleeveless jacket; decorated by fine chrysanthemum pattern. He is carrying a high bamboo vase in front of his belly. In his right hand he is holding a bamboo stick with a peach branch; exciting the monkey. The latter is sitting wide-legged in agitated posture on the padded shawl of the juggler. H.6;5cm. Sign.: Yoshimitsu; in rectangular reserve. Condition A.
