Lillian D. Wald (1867-1940), American sociologist. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wald and her family moved to Rochester, New York where she grew up. She applied to Vassar College at aged 16 and was rejected due to her age. She later attended the New York Hospital Training School for Nurses, from which she graduated in 1891. Wald left nursing to become a doctor and took classes at the Women?檚 Medical College in New York. After seeing the poverty of the Wald in New York's Lower East Side, she founded the Henry Street Settlement to give access to affordable healthcare. Wald also coined the term 'public-health nurse' and initiated the establishment of the US's first public-health nursing program in 1902. Painted by William Valentine Schevill in 1919.
