Fossilised ammonite (Liparoceras sp.) found in Alsace, France, dating from the Pliensbachian period, 190 million years ago. It measures 25cm in diameter. Ammonites are extinct marine animals which lived between 380 and 65 million years ago. They are distantly related to the modern-day nautilus. They lived in coastal waters and inland seas. The animal lived in the last chamber of its coiled shell. Collection Jean-Philippe et Francois-Xavier Blouet, paleontologists.
