INRO: KURIKARARYU-DRAGON AND SEVEN WISE MAN IN A BAMBOO GROVE; IVORY
Mid 19th Century.
Five-piece with contrasting string guidance; consisting of very delicate and pierced carving of double volutes; visible through the string. Delicate; reddish-brown patina. Curved bottom and top; each carved in a very high; delicate and partly undercut molding (so-called sukashi); depicting a dragon wrapped up in round. The two wide sides depict the seven wise man with their attributes in a bamboo grove in a delicate; high moulding on rectangular cartouche. Some of the bamboo twigs are undercut. Signed inside the top cover on a rectangular reserve: Kagetoshi. Lazarnick mentions an inro on p. 554. Meinertzhagen on the other hand speaks of 2 Inro and illustrates one of them with tortoiseshell; see MCI; p. 284. H. 8;7 cm. Condition A.
