He is seen from the right in a three-quarter profile and seated with his right hand in the side; the elbow turned to the viewer. The prodigy Hugo de Groot already had a university degree in 1599: during his stay in France in 1598 he was promoted in law. King Henry IV gave him a medallion on this occasion with a portrait of the king himself; which De Groot is holding in his left hand here. This medallion has probably given rise to the wrong identification.
