Model: this jacket is similar to the standard pattern of the Japanese kosode with the exception of the shawl collar; which is not composed here of leftover pieces of fabric; but is cut as one long strip. The model of the sleeves seems the most deviant at first sight; but here the hanging kimono sleeves are turned a quarter turn and cut open. The original kososdes always follow the pattern of the sleeves that of the buildings; but here it is at odds with the entertainment. A kosode is standard made from a piece of cloth of 10.5 m with a fabric width of approximately 32.0 cm. 10.54 m of fabric with a width of 37.0 cm was used for this Japanese rock. Decoration: the pattern is applied in a refined form of katagami technique. The basic principle of this recess technique is: stencils cut from mulberry leaves are placed on the fabric and a porridge of steamed rice flour and bran is spread over it. The stencil is removed so that the porridge can dry on the fabric. After this; the substance is completely covered with a glue-like liquid from soybeans; and when this has dried; the color can be applied with a brush. Finally; the porridge is washed away; leaving saved; unpainted motifs. The pattern on this jacket is a multi-colored; repeating motif that probably uses more than one stencil. There are usually two holes on the top and bottom of such a stencil; which should facilitate moving the stencil with a repeating motif.
