Tobacco box; Round box with flattened ball shape; and round lid with gold-plated silver hinge. The outside is horizontally divided into two friezes; on which alternating cartouches and weapon trophies with guns; banners; armor and drums. The cartouches in the lower zone contain a small representation of a sailing ship (below the hinge); a country house; a walled fortress by the sea; and a landscape with houses; in the upper zone the cartouches are filled with identical garlands. Between each cartouche and trophy is always a shell design with a hanging and a stylized hanging leaf design. The underside bears a coat of arms with a helmet sign; representing a climbing lion with a sloping beam through which three stars (Nuyts family?). The whole is placed in a wreath of shells and garlands. The lid is decorated with a representation of four classical women; personifications of the liberal arts: in the middle Sculptura who chops a bust; bottom right Architectura (a woman with a compass; sphere and rectangle); possibly standing on the right Geometria with a square; and on the far left an unidentified personification with stick and book.
