Foetus in the womb, illustration. The full term foetus in utero (in the womb) occupies much of the abdominal cavity rising towards the level of the ribcage exerting pressure on the diaphragm. The foetus is connected with the placenta by the umbilical cord showing the umbilical vein (blue) and two umbilical arteries (red). The sheet-like structures to the right of the foetus are the amnion, chorion and decidua, external to which is the uterus. Lateral are the slender fallopian tubes with terminal fimbriae. Parts of the small bowel and the over-arching colon are seen in the abdominal cavity. From Lizars, J. 1823 A system of anatomical plates of the human body. W.H. Lizars, Edinburgh.
