Cape fox (Vulpes chama) kit at the entrance of the family den. Female cape foxes give birth to a litter of between 3 and 6 pups after a gestation period of around 50 days. The pups are weaned at 6-8 weeks and are able to hunt on their own at 4 months. They leave their mothers at 5 months. The cape fox is a small fox, measuring up to 60 centimetres, that inhabits the grasslands and savannahs of southern Africa. It is mostly nocturnal and lives alone or in pairs in dens. It feeds on small rodents, rabbits, reptiles, insects and a little plant matter. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa.
