The museum was founded in 2007 by W. Michael Blumenthal (Werner Michael Blumenthal; born 3rd of January; 1926 in city of Oranienburg; Germany); US Secretary of the Treasury during the government of Jimmy Carter and director of Jewish Museum Berlin. 2007 - 2014. The museum is located in the former Ohel Moshe or Moishe Synagogue; in the Tilanqiao Historic Area of Hongkou district; Shanghai; China. The Ohle Moshe congregation of Shanghai was founded in 1907. The synagogue had been built; in 1927. In 1949; it was confiscated and became psychiatric hospital. In the 1990s; it was returned. In 2007; it was restored. The museum features documents; photographs; films; and personal items documenting the lives of some of the more than 20;000 Jewish residents of the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees; better known as the Shanghai Ghetto; since 1937.
