Tuscany; Radda in Chianti; village of Volpaia: historic tower of the Castello di Volpaia (Volpaia Castle); first mentioned in 1172; Castello di Volpaia was a fortified village at the border between rivals Florence and Siena. First mentioned in 1172; it was part of the military union Lega del Chianti (allies of Florence) and played an important role in the battles of 15th century. Today; the basement of the tower is used as show room and shop of the famous Castello di Volpaia winery and estate. The name Volpaia derives from the famous Florentine family Della Volpaia. Benvenuto della Volpaia and Lorenzo della Volpaia were friends of Leonardo da Vinci and most reknown in Europa for creating astronomical instruments; clocks and clock works.
