Svante Paabo (born 1955), Swedish evolutionary geneticist, taking a sample from a 2000 year old mummy's foot for DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) analysis. Taking DNA from preserved humans gives a good account of how humans spread across the world. This DNA was compared with DNA from present day Egyptians and people from surrounding countries to determine the amount of ethnic mixing in the population. Paabo received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022 for his sequencing of the first Neanderthal genome. Photographed at University of California, Berkeley, USA, in September 1989.
