Suction. Rhodian jug with animal friezes; clay; quickly turned; painted (ceramic); alternately fired; clay; turned; painted; fired; Total: Height: 28.4 cm; Diameter: 21.6 cm; ceramic; animals; early archaic; The bulbous jug with cloverleaf mouth and handle made of three sticks is decorated with two surrounding animal friezes between a halo of rays at the bottom and a braided band at the neck. The varnish is not evenly burned; hence the brown-black to orange-red coloration. The lower frieze shows one wild goat (bezoar goat) running to the left and five to the right; the upper one shows two fallow deer striding to the right; behind them a lion. Only small remains of another animal (bird?) are preserved. The free spaces between the animals are filled with rosettes and volutes. The animal depictions imitate oriental models; probably metal and ivory work. The jug was once considered naucratic (Eugen von Mercklin); but is now regarded as a major work of the rhodian-orientalizing Vlastos style (Herbert Hoffmann). Comparable vessels were made in ancient Miletus.
