Government banned the Hyde Park demonstration, saying it was illegal, but the League countered that the ban itself was illegal and posted posters to this effect on 1 May. The government backed down. Eventually the crowd of several thousand ascended on Hyde Park, London. Reformers: Edmond Beales, The O'Donoghue, Mr. Odger, Mr. Lucraft and Colonel Dickson and others addressed the crowds during the great meeting. Police assembled near the meeting in case of rioting.
