These glycoproteins are responsible for attachment, fusion and entry of virus to target cells. EEEV is a mosquito borne virus that causes inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) in horses. It can be transmitted to humans, where it has a 30 per cent mortality rate and can cause long term neurological problems in survivors. EEEV is present in South and Central America, the Caribbean and eastern Gulf states of the USA.
