US Major and Air Force biologist David G. Simons (1922-2010) near the peak of his climb in the Manhigh 2 balloon. The flight, which launched on the 19th August 1957, set a new altitude record of nearly 31,000 metres (102,000 feet) during its 32-hour duration. Simons photographed himself by timing the flash of a strobe light set in the balloon's gondola to illuminate the interior for periodic photo-recording of the instruments.
