Satellite image of the eye of Hurricane Ian over the Gulf of Mexico, on 28th September 2022. The eye is 55 kilometres wide. The day before Ian had made landfall in western Cuba as a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 205 kilometres per hour. As it moved through the Gulf of Mexico Ian strengthened and made landfall in Florida, USA, on the 28th September as a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 240 kilometres per hour. Ian caused extensive damage, power cuts and storm surges that led to widespread flooding in both Cuba and Florida. Data obtained by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite.
