On 1 January 1649, the "Rump" Parliament resolved that the king was guilty of treason by "levying war against the parliament and kingdom of England." On the 20th the trial of Charles commenced in Westminster Hall before a high court of Commissioners, with Bradshaw as President. Charles laughed at hearing himself called a traitor, and refused to plead, denying the authority of the court.
