Tumska (Cathedral Street); The Royal Gniezno Cathedral; also known as Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) ist also the sanctuary of the first Polish canonized man; St. Adalbert of Prague (Polish: sw. Wojciech; c. 956 - 23 April 997 AD; canonized 999 AD). The Cathedral was built on Lech Hill; legendary place of the foundation of Poland by Slavic leader Lech. A first basilica was built on a former oratory to keep the relics of Saint Adalbert of Prague who was buried here; in 999 AD. In 1025; Boleslaw I Chrobry (Boleslaw I the Brave) was crowned here first King of Poland as a result of the Congress of Gniezno (German: Akt von Gnesen) which happened in 1000 AD. The cathedral was extended until 13th century. In 1331; knights of the German Teutonic Order entered the first capital of Poland; Gniezno (German: Gnesen) and destroyed the cathedral; totally. A new cathedral was built in Gothic style and inaugurated; in 1378 AD. Since 1419; the archbishop of Gniezno is also Primate of the catholic church of Poland (interrupted only 1992 to 2010). From 1641 - 1652; the inner part of the church was transformed into Baroque style. In 1662; sculptor Peter von der Rennen from city of Gdansk (German: Danzig) built the silver relic coffin (sarcophagus) of Saint Adalbert. In 1809; Napoleon Bonaparte used the cathedral as a military camp. After the Nazi German invasion of Poland in 1939; the cathedral was transformed into a concert hall. In 1945; Soviet Red Army troops targeted the cathedral and damaged it heavily. In the 1950s and 1960s; all was reconstructed. In 1979; Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral. In 1997 he came again for the remembrance of the 1000 years ago death of St. Adalbert and inaugurated the new altar; built by German sculptor Heinrich Gerhard B點ker (1922 - 2008) from village of Vellern; part of city of Beckum in German region North Rhine-Westphalia.
