Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a gastrotricha found in wet soil in the Northern Black Forest, Germany. Gastrotrichs are microscopic, worm-like animals found in both freshwater and marine habitats. The rows of hairs (cilia) along its body are used for propulsion, while those near its head end are used to sweep food particles into its mouth. It feeds on bacteria, algae and protozoa. Magnification: x2500 when printed at 15cm wide.
