Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of a cell in interphase of mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. During interphase the nucleus (purple) is clearly visible. As the cell moves into the next stage of mitosis the nuclear envelope will dissolve and the chromosomes condense. Giemsa stain.
