Light micrograph of endocarditis (inflammation of the inner heart tissue) caused by the fungus Candida albicans. C. albicans can cause an infection called candidiasis. The fungus can exist in a single-celled (yeast, ovals) form or a multicelluar hyphal (threads) form. Immunocompromised patients have a greater risk of developing invasive candidiasis. Invasive candidiasis occurs when the fungus enters the bloodstream (candidaemia) and spreads to organs, such as the heart. If left untreated candidaemia can lead to death. Treatments include a range of antifungal medications.
