Mycetoma is a disease caused by an infection of the subcutaneous tissue (deepest layer of skin) with a number of fungi or bacteria, including N. roastii. N. rosatii causes white grain mycetoma, where white grains are present in discharge from the infection site. The infection leads to the formation of a granuloma, a cluster of white blood cells at the site of an infection that occurs as a result of the body's immune response. The infection does not disseminate to other organs, however if left untreated severe deformities and disabilities of the limbs can occur. Treatments include long-term antifungal medication.
