Nathan S Kline (1916-1983, centre), US psychiatrist, and John C Saunders (died 2001, right), US physician and clinical pharmacologist working in a lab at the Rockland State Hospital, Orangeburg, New York, USA. Kline founded a research unit at the hospital in 1952 for the study of psychopharmacology and Saunders was the principal research scientist. Together they discovered that the monoamine oxidase inhibitor iproniazid could elevate mood in patients given the drug to treat tuberculosis and trialled its use as an antidepressant. The success of this and other trials by Kline revolutionised the treatment of mental illnesses, allowing many patients who had been deemed untreatable to live much improved lives.
