Small tortoiseshell butterfly (Aglais urticae). This butterfly usually has two broods, with the adults overwintering and emerging around March. The larvae are nearly all black with twin yellow stripes. The host plant is nettle (Urtica dioica). It is found throughout Europe and across the Palearctic ecozone. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in May.
