Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture through the alveolar bone (grey), the thickened ridge of bone that contains the tooth sockets. This is the area of the alveolar bone closest to the tooth, known as the bundle bone. Collagen fibres (brown) run through the bone to the teeth, anchoring them to the jaw. Several osteocytes (yellow), which are involved in bone remodelling, can be seen embedded in the bone. The picture was created as part of a cooperation with Quintessenz Publishing. Magnification: x1000 when printed at 15cm wide.
