Quaoar (pronounced kwa-whar), composite New Horizons image. When this image was taken, Quaoar (circled, centre right) was approximately 6.4 billion kilometres from the Sun and 2.1 billion kilometres from the New Horizons spacecraft. In addition to many background stars, two far away galaxies IC 1048 and UGC 09485 are also visible (elliptical, bottom left, top right), each about 370 billion times further from New Horizons than Quaoar. New Horizons only sees a portion of Quaoar?™s illuminated surface, very different from the nearly fully illuminated view from Earth. Comparing the two very different perspectives gives scientists a valuable opportunity to study the light-scattering properties of Quaoar?™s surface. Quaoar measures 1300 kilometres in diameter. Image obtained in July 2016 by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on the New Horizons spacecraft.
