Unemployed from all over London assembled on the evening of Oct. 18th. at St. George's Circus, Southwark, for a mass demonstration at the offices of the London County Council (where the L.C.C. were sitting) as a protest against the means test. Drastic precautions were taken by Scotland Yard to deal with unruly outbreaks. Mouted police charged and foot police used their truncheons. Late at night looting broke out in the Lambeth vicinity and several shops had their windows broken and goods on show stolen what a baker's shop in Lower Marsh, Lambeth looked like after the disturbance.
