Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Vibrio alginolyticus bacteria. This Gram negative bacterium is found in marine environments either free-living or as a parasite of marine organisms. It is a human pathogen that can cause ear (otitis) and wound infections, as well as seafood poisoning. V. alginolyticus is also responsible for the production of the potent neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) in some marine animals including puffer fish. Magnification: X10,000 when printed at 15cm wide.
