The Hatter. In the foreground a hat is being shaped (blocked). In the background the hats are being felted 'kettle'. Mercury was used during the manufacture and many hatters suffered from the uncontrollable shaking typical of mercury poisoning. Hand-coloured woodcut from The Book of English Trades; London; 1821.
