Hazel (Corylus avellana) nuts and foliage. This nut bearing plant is native to Europe and western Asia. The leaves are round or oval with a serrated edge, ending in a point. They are also hairy when young and look pleated along the veins. The nuts are green, produced in clusters of up to five together. Each nut also has a leafy covering (husk) which may cover the whole nut or be shorter. The nut falls out of the husk when ripe. Photographed in April, in Dorset, UK.
