Young child's face disfigured by gangrenous stomatis or cancrum oris. This disease is an infective gangrene of the tissues of the cheek or mouth and occurs in undernourished children. It generally arises as a complication of Vincent's Disease (ulcerative gingivitis). The tissue destruction is rapid and painless. If detected early enough, grangrenous stomatis can be treated simply and cheaply, preventing disfiguration.
